BiographyA.Oforiwaa Aduonum is an Assistant Professor of Music who teaches courses in Black Music, World Music, and directs the African Drumming and Dance Ensemble. She has a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Fisk University and master’s and doctoral degrees in Ethnomusicology from Florida State University. She recently presented four papers at the International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE) and the Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) on the importance of movement, active participation, listening, and community awareness to African music making, elements which are also crucial to jazz creation, participation, and performance. She won the Kirk Visiting Professor award at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia in 1998 and 2003. Harrock Hall Music published her recent book, Rhythms and Stories for African Bell Ensembles. Aduonum’s research interests include the arts and social change and using the arts to expand communities. | |
