Dr. Dorothy E. Lee, former chair of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work, created an endowed fund in 2004 for nontraditional women students. The purpose of this fund is to help women 25 years of age and older to begin a college education or to return to college to continue studies toward a degree. The fund will serve a dual purpose: to provide scholarships, and to make available grant money for unexpected expenses. Dr. Lee's decision to attend Illinois State Normal University changed her life and she wants that to happen for other nontraditional women students.
Dr. Lee was herself a nontraditional student when she entered Illinois State Normal University as an undergraduate student. She joined the faculty of Illinois State in 1962, retiring in 1991. She served six years as chair of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work, and as acting chair for the departments of History, Foreign Languages, and Political Science. She was on the original committee to form a women's studies minor and chaired a 1987 task force to determine the future direction of the women's studies program. The scholarship is administered by the Women's Studies Program with the assistance of a committee of women representatives from Women's Studies, Social Work, and Sociology/Anthropology selected by the Director of Women's Studies.
Each candidate for a Dr. Dorothy E. Lee Scholarship should meet the following qualifications:
All things being equal, preference is to be given to a woman student from Montgomery County, south-central Illinois, and/or a non-metropolitan area.
The recipient of the scholarship will be eligible to apply for the scholarship again in a subsequent year, providing that she is a continuing student, and has demonstrated good academic achievement by maintaining a 3.0 cumulative grade average.
